© 2001 European Molecular Biology Organization EMBO reports vol. 2 | no. 10 | 2001 877 asked. ‘Why would anyone consent to this, and how could a field trial be done without consent of the local population?’ Spielman also noted that 30 years ago when the WHO tried to release sterilised mosquitoes in the Indian countryside, the local population were so suspicious of the project that it was ultimately called off. He is also somewhat cynical about the funding of genetic engineering; he believes that’s where the money is currently for research, which has attracted researchers, but that it is little more than a passing fad. ‘My biggest concern in working with the genome of these vectors is that parasites have a genome, too; who’s to say that the parasite won’t be able to mutate in response to a changing host genome?’ asked Bruce Christensen. Most researchers in the area are examining the response of the vector to the parasite, but fewer are looking at the parasite’s response to the vector, which he believes is an area worthy of attention. ‘There’s been a lot of co-evolution between the two organisms, with different strains developing in different areas’, Christensen said. ‘We are a long way from impacting vector-borne infections, but I’m the last to say it won’t work’, he added.

The Responses of Salsola orientalis to Salt Stress

Objective: Salt stress is a world-wide problem and soil salinity is common in arid and semi-arid regions. This study was undertaken to investigate salt tolerance in Salsola orientalis in laboratory and natural conditions and recognize the mechanisms that allow it to tolerate these conditions. Methods: This study had two parts of greenhouse and natural habitats. The treatment s...

Assessment of Saltwater Pollution in Azarshahr Plain Groundwater, Iran: Conjugating GALDIT Method and Geostatistics

Overutilization of groundwater resources can put their quality under stress. It could be base on rapid declination in groundwater level leading to salt water intrusion in the coastal aquifers. The objective of this study was to map the vulnerability of salt water intrusion of the Urmia Lake, Iran to nearby coastal aquifer (Azarshahr) using GALDIT method. The GALDIT index based on six parameters...

Microplastics in water, sediment and salts from traditional salt producing ponds

Plastic pollution has universally known accumulated in all environment compartments and accelerating threat to the sustainability of earth. Field survey to examine the occurrence of microplastics in ancient sea water evaporation technology of ponds at Pallengu-Jeneponto, was conducted. From this sea salt producing ponds, samples of water, sediment and freshly harvested salts were collected. Six...

Isolation and Structural Characterization of Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metal Salts with Synthetic Non Cyclic Ionophores

In the present study, an investigation on the complex formation between mono- and divalent metal ions (Na+, K+, Li+ and Mg2+) in the form of salt with different podands using various solvents has been carried out.  Isolated complexes were characterized by different spectroscopic techniques viz. IR, NMR and elemental analysis. On the basis of ...

Fluvial Facies and Provenance of the Early Permian Warchha Sandstone Salt Range, Pakistan

Deposits of the Warchha Sandstone in the Salt Range, Pakistan are characterised by a range of fluvial facies and architectural elements that together preserve a record of both the proximal and distal parts of a meandering river system that drained the northern margin of Gondwanaland. Several fining-upward cycles are recognised and completely preserved cycles can be divided in to three parts; a ...
